Choosing the wrong pallet racking system can mean wasted floor space, slower stock picking, or paying for capacity you don’t actually need. For most UK warehouses, the decision comes down to two of the most widely used systems: drive-in racking and selective racking.
Selective racking gives you direct access to individual pallets, whilst drive-in racking sacrifices that access for a much higher storage density. Neither system is better than the other; the right choice depends on your available storage space, how quickly you need to access stock, and the types of goods you’re storing.

What Is Selective Pallet Racking?
Selective pallet racking is the standard format most warehouses use, built from uprights and beams that create single-depth bays with an access aisle running along each side.
Each pallet is directly accessible, so there’s no need to move others out of the way to reach it. This makes selective racking well suited to warehouses with a wide range of products, frequent picking operations and a first-in, first-out (FIFO) stock rotation.
Selective racking is also generally compatible with most standard forklift types and beam heights can usually be adjusted as pallet sizes change.
What Is Drive-In Pallet Racking?
Drive-in pallet racking is a high-density system built from continuous rails that forklifts drive straight into. There are no aisles between rows, maximising the available floor space, so pallets can be stored several deep, typically five to ten, depending on the system design and available space.
As the pallets sit so deep into the system, stock usually follows a last-in, first-out (LIFO) rotation unless it’s set up as drive-through racking which allows loading and unloading from opposite ends for (FIFO) flow.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Each System
Selective Racking
Advantages: direct access to every pallet with no need to move stock to reach it, works with most standard forklift types, and well suited to a wide range of products with frequent picking.
Disadvantages: lower storage density than drive-in racking, and aisle space is needed on both sides of each row.
Drive-In Racking
Advantages: considerably higher storage density, and no aisles are needed between rows, making better use of available floor space.
Disadvantages: direct access is generally limited to the pallet at the front of each lane, stock generally follows LIFO rotation unless set up as drive-through racking, and it requires a forklift operator comfortable manoeuvring within the structure.
Which Pallet Racking System Is Right For Your Warehouse?
Neither system is universally better. The right choice will depend on your available space, stock profile, access requirements and preferred stock rotation method.
Selective Racking: This type of racking is best suited to warehouses that have a wide product range, frequent order picking, varied pallet sizes and strict FIFO requirements.
Drive-in Racking: Suits warehouses storing larger volumes of fewer product lines, where floor space is limited and LIFO rotation is workable. Commonly found in cold storage, bulk manufacturing and seasonal stock.
In many warehouses, a hybrid setup, selective racking for picking zones and drive-in racking for bulk reserve stock, works better than choosing one system exclusively.
Buying Used Racking – What to Check First?
Buying used pallet racking is a cost-effective and sustainable way to improve your warehouse storage system, but you must do so carefully.
Before you buy, look out for:
- Bent or corroded uprights and beams
- A clearly marked safe working load
- Evidence of a recent inspection and maintenance
- Suitability for your intended layout and loads
These checks matter just as much with used racking as they would with new, and having a system properly inspected before it’s installed is simply good practice.
