What is Very Narrow Aisle Racking?
Very narrow aisle racking, often shortened to VNA racking, is a high-density form of adjustable pallet racking. The aisles are reduced substantially, allowing additional rack runs to be installed while maintaining direct access to each pallet location.
Unlike drive-in or double deep systems, pallets are not stored behind one another. Each load remains individually accessible, making VNA suitable for warehouses with a broad range of SKUs or regular pallet movements.
The trade-off is that conventional counterbalance forklifts cannot usually operate within the reduced aisle space. VNA layouts depend on specialist handling equipment and must be planned around the truck specification from the outset.
How Very Narrow Aisle Racking Works
VNA racking is arranged in tall runs separated by tightly controlled working aisles. A specialist turret truck travels along each aisle and rotates or extends its forks to place pallets onto either side of the racking.
Depending on the operation, the truck may be guided by floor-mounted rails or an induction wire installed within the warehouse floor. This keeps the vehicle centred and reduces the steering corrections required in such a confined space. Important operating considerations include:

WHAT FORKLIFT IS NEEDED FOR VNA RACKING?
VNA racking normally requires a specialist turret or very narrow aisle truck. The forks can rotate or extend to handle pallets on either side without the truck turning within the aisle.
The truck may be rail-guided or wire-guided. Some models also allow the operator to rise with the load for high-level pallet handling or order picking.
IS THERE A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN NARROW AISLE AND VERY NARROW AISLE RACKING?
Narrow aisle racking typically uses a reach truck within aisles that are narrower than a standard wide-aisle layout.
Very narrow aisle racking reduces that space further and usually requires a dedicated turret truck with a guidance system. VNA can provide greater storage density, but it places more demands on the floor, truck and layout design.
DOES VNA RACKING REQUIRE A PERFECTLY FLAT FLOOR?
VNA trucks require a high standard of floor flatness because they operate at height with very limited side clearance.
Small floor variations can affect truck movement and stability. The existing slab should therefore be considered during planning, particularly when converting a conventional warehouse into a VNA operation.
